Last term our new Chirnside Park group suddenly faced the new challenge of adapting to online classes. I presented the classes in the usual style, squinting to see dimly lit, partially visible dancers while demonstrating and discussing dance techniques.

The outcome was average. The music chopped in and out as I spoke and neither were particularly audible. We all had an average time and were relieved when it was announced that by term three we would be allowed back in the studio together breathing the same air and dancing with the joy of reunion.

But this wasn't to be as further lockdown restrictions were announced. Term three classes were again transferred to a Zoom format, only this time I had the benefit of experience. I decided that to provide a quality class experience I had to stop verbally competing with the music. Additionally the organisers and myself decided to offer recordings of the classes to dancers who were unable to attend the live Zoom meeting. This meant that students were no longer visible on screen, which created a different energy that required a different, more meditative style of teaching.

Fortunately I have long practiced meditation, attuning to a source of creativity that informs my work from moment to moment. This means that when I focus my energy inward I can attune to that source of raw creativity and channel it into a fluidic dance workout that elevates your energy on physical as well as spiritual levels. In this case spiritual encompasses all that can't be observed and yet exists. It's the type of energy that we move around our bodies as we practice Majickal Bellydance.

So during these special lockdown Zoom classes I'm still teaching Majickal Bellydance. Which means opening and balancing energy centres throughout body, mind and spirit. I'm just doing so without the verbal instruction. But you won't miss out on a thing, because isn't dance itself a form of non-verbal communication? Teaching via Zoom requires that I exaggerate my hand signals in a way that helps you understand what is happening, or what is about to happen. The hands utilise the same energy centres as speech, so it's a natural transition, like sign language.

That means the classes are easy to follow. And even if you feel like you've missed something you can watch and half-know what's going on the first time around and then enjoy the class again via the video link sent to your inbox. The second time around you'll find the classes even easier and you can even keep watching them as many times as you like before the end of term. The pace is slightly faster so they won't be too easy to watch a second time.

This Zoom series of classes consists of a six class pack. These classes will help you to stay mobile while you're locked in your home and they don't require much space. No matter what time during the term you enrol you will receive the entire pack of links to six classes. Your experience of the class will be exactly the same whether you show up live or whether you save the link for later in the week, or later in the term.

The enrolment process is the same:

If you would like to enrol by telephone or enquire about your enrolment please phone CIRE Chirnside Community Hub directly on the number below. Leave a message as the office may be temporarily unattended due to COVID restrictions.
